Theological disagreements are often complicated by a deceptively simple problem: two people may use the same vocabulary while operating with different definitions. Abbott and Costello’s famous “Who’s on First?” routine illustrates the problem comically. One man hears “Who” as a question; the other understands “Who” as a proper name. The words are identical, but the dictionaries are different.
The same phenomenon occurs in theological discussion, particularly in debates concerning “Total Depravity.” Terms such as dead, grace, free will, regeneration, and faith can sound familiar while carrying significantly different theological meanings. For that reason, theological discussion must begin by allowing Scripture—not a theological system—to establish the meaning and function of its vocabulary.
